In September 2011, the most destructive in Texas history raged through Bastrop County, TX. The Bastrop County Complex Fire destroyed 1,667 homes, destroyed 33,033 acres and claimed two lives. Known as the Lost Pines Region, this blaze devastated the population of its signature Loblolly pine and further compromised the habitat of the endangered Houston Toad.

AFTA took its mission to Bastrop County, TX to support the recovery of the Lost Pines Region.  Reclaimed materials were salvaged from fire site locations for artists to transfigure into works of art. Together with support from creative partners Big Medium and over 60 local artists throughout Central Texas; benefit exhibitions took place in Austin, Bastrop and Lufkin during April 2012 – November 2012. To compliment the scope of the exhibitions, Art.Science.Gallery. curated a unique art-science exhibit that spotlighted the intersection of art & fire ecology with relevance to the Central Texas region.

Proceeds supported the restoration efforts of the Lost Pines Recovery Team.

Special thanks to our host family, The Smiths for their support and friendship along the journey.
